Race 3 - A Thrilling Display Above the Romanian Carpathians

Last night, the virtual skies of Romania were alight with the competitive spirit of gliding enthusiasts as Race 3 of the 1st FAI Virtual World Gliding Championship 2024 unfolded in spectacular fashion. The race, set in the picturesque landscape of Romania, featured pilots in the 15m class, who took on the task with eagerness and expert precision. The race was commented by Jean-David Thoby and Antoine Havet, with a special guest: Alin Simion from the Romanian Gliding Team!

As the countdown echoed through the digital atmosphere, pilots from across the globe aligned their gliders at the starting line. With a collective breath, the race was on, the competitors swiftly crossing the line in a beautifully coordinated launch. The gliders were spread widely, taking advantage of the open space to maneuver.

The competition was fierce, with notable pilots such as Frank (09) from Germany, who had to retake the start after an early launch, and who found himself in a tight spot right from the start. The event was filled with contentions and challenges, as pilots like Philippe Lata (PLT) and Ben Fest (BF) navigated the tricky start line with varying success.

As the race progressed, pilots were seen making strategic decisions, taking a few turns in the thermals before setting off to capitalize on their climbing positions. Philipe (PLT), was one of the pilots who left early in the hope of securing a qualifying spot after a near miss in the South African leg of the race.

The race was a true testament to the complexity and skill required in virtual gliding. As the pilots approached the turnpoints, the tension was palpable, with each decision potentially altering the outcome of the race. Some, like Whiskey 22, faced a tough climb due to their lower altitude, underscoring the importance of strategic climbing and energy management. Indeed, pilots must evaluate their position before each turnpoint and try to anticipate as much as they can, the next leg… will they be high enough to cross the mountains, or will they have to find another way towards the next TP?

The pilots had to contend with tricky conditions, as the mountainous terrain of Romania offered a challenging environment. Those who were flying safely and as high as they could, were the ones who took the lead before the final leg.

In the end, it was a race that showcased both the beauty of Romania's landscapes and the thrill of competitive virtual gliding. With pilots navigating flat plateaus, avoiding perilous hills, and seeking energy in the mountains, the race provided an unforgettable experience for participants and viewers alike.

The night's event was rounded off with thanks to our special guest Alin Simion, who provided insightful commentary! Did you know that you could climb up to 11km high in the Romanian Waves?

The conclusion of the race was marked by a dramatic finish as Ukrainian pilot Andrii Lohvynchuk clinched an impressive victory. He was closely tailed by the skillful German competitor Felix Neuburger and the formidable British pilot Sean Churchill. However, after the race, adjustments were made due to penalties incurred by Andrii, which shifted him to 3rd place. Despite this, his performance remained outstanding, securing him a spot in the Pro Championship.

With eyes now turning towards the next race in Argentina's club class, the gliding community is eager to see how pilots will adapt to a completely different environment, with the vast flatlands and iconic gliders like the LS4 and ASW 20 awaiting their command.

Stay tuned for further updates as the 1st FAI Virtual World Gliding Championship 2024 continues to bring together the best of virtual gliding from around the world.
