Pavullo, Italy - The second FAI Virtual Sailplane Grand Prix reached its midpoint with an exhilarating Race 5 over the picturesque skies of the Appenine. As the competition heats up, every point becomes crucial in the quest for virtual gliding glory.

The stage was set for another high-stakes race, featuring a virtual cloud base ranging from 2,000 to 2,300 meters and a 12-kilometer-per-hour southwest wind. Twenty skilled pilots took flight, all vying for the top spot in this tightly contested World Final.

From the very start, the race was characterized by an intense gaggle of gliders navigating in close quarters. With 20 pilots in the mix, maintaining situational awareness became paramount as they continuously adjusted their flight parameters to climb in the first thermals and keep pace on the glides, to avoid being overtaken from unexpected directions.

As the race progressed, the challenge was compounded by shifting winds, rendering the usually advantageous ridge-soaring strategy less viable. Instead, the pilots had to employ tactical acumen, seeking out optimal flight paths along energy lines.

Throughout the race, the competition remained fierce, with several pilots making strategic moves and holding their positions at the front of the pack. Approaching Turn Point 1, the tension mounted, and pilots had to make critical decisions to gain an advantage. Some of them stopped in a thermal. Others decided to go for a long glide, taking a huge risk. Would they lose it all?

Ben Fest (GER), the reigning world champion, emerged as the initial leader, with Donat-Pierre Luigi (FRA) and Witold Rozak (POL) hot on his tail. Not far behind, a closely packed group of pilots remained ready to seize any opportunity to advance.

The race's ultimate test came on the final leg as pilots sought to gain precious altitude from rising air currents to maximize their gliders' performance. Victory depended on finding the perfect lift to secure the win.

In the heart-pounding final moments, Donat-Pierre Luigi seized the day, crossing the finish line first. He was closely pursued (4 seconds later) by Arne Martin Göttler, who displayed remarkable determination. Ben Fest clinched third place - his first podium of the week - while Darius Gudziunas (LT) just managed to secure fourth in a nail-biting finish.

Wojciech Sołtysik (POL), the overall leader, continued his consistently strong performance, earning valuable points to maintain his lead. Joshua Arntz (GER) and Witold Rozak (POL) followed closely behind, highlighting the fiercely competitive nature of the event.
