✺ Frequently asked questions ✺

  • Virtual gliding simulates the experience of flying a glider using specialized software. It allows you to experience the thrill of soaring, using thermals and ridge lift to stay aloft, just like in real gliding.

FAI Virtual Gliding focuses on competitive virtual gliding, where pilots fly pre-defined tasks, navigating waypoints and optimizing their flight paths to achieve the best time or distance.

It's a challenging and rewarding activity that combines skill, strategy, and knowledge of meteorology and aerodynamics.

Whether you're a seasoned pilot or a complete beginner, virtual gliding offers a fun and engaging way to experience the sport.

  • FAI Virtual Gliding primarily uses the Condor 3 flight simulator.

You will need to purchase and install Condor 3 to participate in official FAI Virtual Gliding events.

    You can buy it here!

  • A computer capable of running Condor 3 is the essential requirement.

Condor 3 accepts very low specs, compared to others flight simulators, which is a great advantage.

To install and run Condor 3 you will need:

    • Intel i3, i5, i7, i9 CPU or equivalent. • Around 60GB of free drive space to run the installer. After install, Condor will consume 35GB

    • A dedicated graphics card with 2 GB memory. We suggest the graphics card should have a benchmark score of 6000 or above (https://www.videocardbenchmark.net/). Lower performances cards can be used but you may need to reduce some graphics settings. (Integrated graphics cards and cards with benchmark result below 2000 are usable, but with severely reduced graphics settings)

    • Internet connection required for activation

While a mouse and keyboard can be used initially, a joystick is strongly recommended for a realistic and enjoyable experience. A rudder pedal set can further enhance the realism.

Some pilots also use head tracking devices for a more immersive view. Our Discord Channel have threads dedicated to hardware recommendations.

  • The main cost is the purchase price of the Condor 3 flight simulator.

Check the Condor website for current pricing. (69.99 - 99.99€)

A good joystick can range in price, so research options that fit your budget. You can easily find joysticks at around 30-50€ to start with!

Rudder pedals and head tracking (or VR headsets) devices are optional and add to the cost.

Joining the FAI Virtual Gliding events itself is generally free, but participation in specific highly competitive events might have entry fees (check the event details).

  • Our Discord server or the Condor Forum are the best places to get help with technical issues.

Other community members have likely encountered similar problems and can offer solutions.

Search the forum for existing threads, or post a new question describing your issue.

  • No prior real-world flying experience is necessary to enjoy virtual gliding.
