Opening of the 2nd FAI Virtual Sailplane Grand Prix - World Final 2023 with Peter Eriksen (IGC)

Pavullo, 27 August - The skies came alive with excitement as the 2nd FAI Virtual Sailplane Grand Prix World Final 2023 was officially declared open during a virtual Opening Ceremony. The event featured a distinguished guest of honor: Mr. Peter Eriksen, President of the International Gliding Commission (IGC) at the FAI (Fédération Aéronautique Internationale), who addressed a speech to the virtual gliding community and shared some inspiring words.

Mr. Eriksen began by extending a warm welcome to everyone in attendance, emphasizing his anticipation for the upcoming week of thrilling virtual sailplane races. He expressed his delight in being a part of this momentous event, underscoring the camaraderie that unites gliding enthusiasts worldwide.

Mr. Eriksen acknowledged the diverse group of pilots, both real and virtual, who had come together for this event. Mr. Eriksen praised virtual gliding for its affordability, accessibility, and inclusivity. He highlighted that participants could engage in this sport irrespective of their age, physical condition, or geographic location—a feature that sets virtual gliding apart.

Mr. Eriksen revealed that the IGC is committed to developing virtual gliding further, with plans to align it more closely with physical gliding championships. He mentioned the ongoing World Series and the eventual aim of awarding real FAI gold medals to the winners of virtual gliding competitions, mirroring the recognition given to physical glider pilots.

Acknowledging the impressive development of virtual gliding, Mr. Eriksen praised the dedicated individuals responsible for creating the scenarios, rules, and infrastructure behind this virtual sport. He expressed his belief that many other sports would envy the progress made in virtual gliding.

Moreover, Mr. Eriksen anticipated that virtual gliding would help expand gliding's reach into new territories, including countries like China and India, where traditional gliding may be less prevalent.

Concluding his speech, Mr. Eriksen commended the professional and dedicated team managing the event, ensuring its success. He humorously noted that virtual participants would miss out on the hospitality and cuisine of Pavullo, a small drawback for those engaging from a distance, as the World Sailplane Grand Prix Final (11th Serie) is taking place at the same time, in Italy.

In a fitting conclusion, Mr. Eriksen officially declared the 2nd FAI Virtual Sailplane Grand Prix World Final 2023 open, setting the stage for an exhilarating week of virtual sailplane races. His words of encouragement resonated with the virtual gliding community, adding a sense of prestige to the event.

With Mr. Eriksen's declaration, the virtual gliders took to the skies, launching the first race of this highly anticipated competition.
