Race 3 - Jennen and Rozak with a Crazy Finish!
Welcome to Race 3 of the Pro Championship!
Race 3 of the Pro Championship in the 1st FAI Virtual World Gliding Championship (VWGC) 2024 took the competitors to the skies over Italy, with a course spanning 234 kilometers. The excitement was palpable as the pilots readied themselves for another day of intense competition, each one aiming to outmaneuver and outfly their peers.
Course and Weather Conditions
The race commenced from Trento, with a route that guided the pilots through turnpoints at Ponte Gardena, Belluno, and a return to Trento. The weather conditions were favorable with a south-west wind blowing at 15 km/h, providing moderate thermals and ridge lift opportunities. The cloud base was at a comfortable level, offering medium thermal activity that required pilots to balance their altitude efficiently.
Strategic Starts and Early Moves
The starting point at Calceranica Al Lago saw pilots launching with a maximum ground speed of 170 km/h. As the race began, it quickly became evident that strategic decision-making at the start would play a crucial role. Pilots like Jeroen Jennen and Witold Rozak quickly established themselves among the leaders by finding optimal lift and maintaining high speeds right from the beginning.
Mid-Race Dynamics and Tactical Adjustments
The mid-race phase was characterized by a mix of tactical flying and strategic use of thermals. Pilots needed to adapt to the changing conditions and make quick decisions to optimize their routes. Jeroen Jennen's decision to maintain a high altitude paid off, allowing him to cruise efficiently and stay ahead of the pack. Witold Rozak also demonstrated strong performance, keeping pace with the leaders and making strategic climbs when necessary.
Key Turnpoints and Challenging Terrain
Navigating through the turnpoints required precision and skill. The transition from Turnpoint 1 at Ponte Gardena to Turnpoint 2 at Belluno was particularly challenging, with pilots having to navigate through varying lift conditions and rugged terrain. The south-west wind provided both opportunities and obstacles, pushing some pilots off course while others harnessed the ridge lift to their advantage.
Thrilling Finish and Intense Competition
The final leg of the race provided one of the most thrilling finishes seen in the FAI Virtual Gliding events so far! Jeroen Jennen and Witold Rozak were neck-and-neck, pushing their gliders to the limit in a bid for the top spot, leaving commentators on the edge of their seats! The finish line saw an incredibly tight race, with Jeroen Jennen narrowly edging out Witold Rozak to claim first place. The margin was so slim that the difference could be measured in mere meters, showcasing the high level of competition and skill on display.
